Calling all Crowbuilders!

TEAM Jaffrey’s Scarecrows on the Common Returns- Saturday, Oct. 11

jaffrey-scarecrows-on-the-commonTEAM Jaffrey’s signature autumn event, Scarecrows on the Common is returning to Jaffrey’s Main Street on Saturday, October 11, 2014. Join neighbors and friends at this great family event in the center of downtown Jaffrey (Library lawn and Town Common ). Scarecrows on the Common runs from 11am until 4:00 pm. Cost for the “Crows” is only $5.00 each (all materials are provided) and the creations will live on the streets of Jaffrey for two weeks following the event. Ribbons for first, second and third place will be awarded in four categories: Best Family Crow, Business Crow, Non Profit Crow, and new this year Downtown Jaffrey Pride! The afternoon is filled with wholesome family activities: games for all ages, hayrides, a pie-eating contest, early morning yard-sales, affordable snack and lunch concessions, children’s art, face painting, raffle prizes, benefit bake sales and more! Scarecrows on the Common was first held by TEAM Jaffrey in October 2000 to bring families together in downtown Jaffrey to enjoy the fall season. Approximately 300 Scarecrows are built every year. The crows become a decoration, a spectacle, and a source of community pride for Jaffrey residents of all ages! New this year, the newly re-formed Jaffrey-Rindge 4-H Club will be bringing us Cows on the common and an educational and tasty cider-press demonstration.

Scarecrows will be on display through late October for the community to enjoy. “So many visitors from well-beyond Jaffrey continue to make both ‘crow-building’ and ‘crow-watching’ a part of autumn rituals with family and friends,” expressed TEAM’s executive Director Melanie McDonald. “I’ve been getting calls from families and organizations in Keene, Concord, and Nashua, New Hampshire asking about when the crows will be up so that they can plan their leaf-peeping and autumn excursions around it.” In addition to the event itself, the crows display draw many to Jaffrey throughout the month where many linger exploring downtown shops, eateries, and other events nearby- a wonderful way to promote downtown in the fall.”

Scarecrows on the Common is generously sponsored by Atlas Advanced Pyrotechnics, Belletetes, Bouyea-Fassetts Bakery, Lab ‘n Lager, Jaffrey-Rindge Rotary Club, Maple Mills, MDS, McDonald’s of Jaffrey, and New England Wood Pellet. Our event partners are the Boy Scout Local Troop 33, Downtown Merchants, Jaffrey- Rindge 4-H Club, Jaffrey Public Library, Jaffrey Woman’s Club, Monadnock Rod & Gun Club, and the Town of Jaffrey.
